Why your business should rank for its own name…and often does not

The most valuable search any local business can win is its own name. Most businesses are quietly losing it to directories, aggregators and their own social profiles.

When someone hears about your business at a networking event, in a waiting room, or from a neighbour, the next thing they do is type your name into a search bar. That search is the highest-intent moment you will ever get. The person already knows you exist and is deciding whether to take you seriously.

Most local businesses assume they own that result. Many do not. What frequently ranks instead is a directory listing nobody maintains, an aggregator page with the wrong hours, or a social profile last updated in 2019.

The fix is not complicated, but it is specific. You need at least one page you control that is unambiguously about your business, carries your name in the title tag, describes what you do in plain text, and is linked to from somewhere credible.

That last part is where most local businesses stall. You can build the page. Getting a credible site to link to it is harder — and it is a large part of why placement inside an economic development context is worth more than placement inside a directory.
